The smacking of children is often a very emotive subject for parents (me included I must say). Parents tend to fall into one of two camps: the "I often used to get a clip round the ear or a smack from my parent and it didn't do me any harm" camp, and those parents who believe that smacking is an unnecessary, inappropriate and counter productive form of discipline.
Smacking children has in fact, for some time, been illegal, if such smacking leaves any visible mark on the child.
The Children's Commissioner for England, Maggie Atkinson, has just stated her view that all smacking - even so called mild smacking - should be banned. You can read her views in this article.
Best wishes,
Tony
